The Ungrateful Ram
THE UNGRATEFUL RAM
Yesterday I witnessed something extraordinary in my home village, this particular old woman called Nabusoti had reared this ram for close to three years and had grown fond of it, she cared for it more than she did for her grandchildren.
There is a myth in my village that rams have maggots or jiggers locally called ‘zinyende’ in their brains, and when a jigger triggers its medulla, the ram becomes violent.
On this fateful day, Nabusoti was tethering her ram when a jigger struck, she had her machete nearby and had rested it on the ground. Out of the blue, the ram charged towards her and rammed into her to fall over a near by small hill where she sustained some injuries. She stood up, climbed up the hill and picked her machette all this time so angry at the ungrateful animal, it charged again this time with a lot of force and determination.
She was left with no option but to defend herself with the available tool, she lifted her machete and cut the animal to death. she sold part of the meat which amounted to 14kg fetching her a small amount of money. I luckily ate some of the meat when I went to visit my people in the village.
The ram had died for its own stupidity but the life of old Nabusoti was safe.
